It's official! WMA has established an archive at Texas Woman's University in Denton,Texas to fulfill our purpose,"Promote and preserve for historical, educational and literary purposes the role of women pilots, navigators and aircrew in the service of their country during times of war and peace".
The announcement was made on 16 March 2013 at the Women in Aviation International Conference in Nashville.
The archive is funded through the WMA Endowment which is administered by the TWU Foundation. WMA is committed to funding the Endowment start-up sum of $10,000 by December 31, 2018. Our goal is to raise $2,000 each year for the next five years but we hope to reach that amount (and beyond) much sooner. As of November 2014 we have collected $4,510 from individual and corporate donors. Wells Fargo has led the way with the generous sum of $2,500!
Although the Special Collections section of TWU's Blagg-Huey Library already accepts our individual and organizational items, the establishment of an endowment will ensure that funds are available to process and store our collections as well as make them available (as approved by WMA) for research and educational exhibits.
Thanks to the support of our membership and others, women military aviators are leaving a lasting legacy - a comprehensive picture of the achievements and contributions of women military aviators. To paraphrase the TWU Foundation, "We are creating a lasting heritage, encouraging present and future leadership, and making a difference in the lives of many."
